Vida R. Jones Scholarship

Vida Ree Jones was born May 27, 1944 in Willow Springs, NC on a berry farm to sharecroppers. Having 8 sisters and 3 brothers, life on the farm and in the rural south during the time of Jim Crow was not an easy one to endure. They learned early on to take care of themselves by growing their own fruits and vegetables and tending to the animals. She spent most of her days on the farm tending to the crops with her siblings. Even though times were hard, it was a strong sense of community that got her through a lot growing up.

In 1969, she packed up her husband and moved to New Jersey, later sending for her child because she wanted to have a better life for her and her family. Once settled she and her husband worked several odd jobs while she completed her GED. Eventually she graduated and went on to put herself through nursing school while raising a family. She became a Certified Nursing Assistant and continued to work in the nursing field for 34 years until retirement in 2006.

"I would tell any young girl going through obstacles to stay focused, pray and stay focused on the positive things and don't get involved with people who say they're your friends, but get you into things you know doesn't feel right to you. You stay focused, do positive things..if God brought you this far, he'll take you further as long as you're doing the right things always.
